WHAT IS COSMETIC AND RECONSTRUCTIVE PLASTIC SURGERY?

Aesthetic surgery encompasses both cosmetic and reconstructive surgery, which aims to improve the aesthetic appearance and functionality of a person’s body. Even cosmetic surgery is based on reconstructive principles, and no reconstructive surgery is done without trying to improve aesthetic appearance. Therefore, a plastic surgeon is trained in and uses aspects of cosmetic and reconstructive surgery in every case.

Reconstructive plastic surgery involves reconstructing body parts to improve the appearance and physical function. This procedure may be recommended to treat severe injuries or deformities caused by trauma, birth defects, or medical conditions such as cancer and infection.

Cosmetic plastic surgery is done to enhance cosmetic appearance by adjusting and reshaping the structures of the body. There are different types of cosmetic procedures performed, namely breast augmentation, breast lift, liposuction, abdominoplasty and facelift, to name a few.

Before undergoing any aesthetic procedure, a plastic surgeon will first conduct a detailed assessment of the body part/s that will be treated, and the patient’s medical history will be examined as well.

Patients living with certain medical conditions should not have cosmetic plastic surgery.

These medical conditions may include:

  • Patients who are recovering from a heart attack, severe infection, or other serious diseases
  • Patients diagnosed with infectious hepatitis or HIV infection
  • Patients diagnosed with cancer which may metastasize
  • Patients who are extremely obese
  • Patients that have a blood clotting disorder

Speak to your plastic surgeon to find out if you are a suitable candidate for cosmetic surgery.

WHEN YOU CHOOSE A DOCTOR WHO IS A MEMBER OF APRASSA, YOU CAN BE ASSURED THAT YOUR SURGEON IS QUALIFIED IN ALL ASPECTS OF COSMETIC AND RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGERY.
