Who may perform Cosmetic Surgery

Only specialists may perform cosmetic surgery. This is the ruling of the Health Professions Council of South Africa.

In the main, cosmetic surgery is performed by registered specialist plastic and reconstructive surgeons - that means us, and most plastic surgeons in South Africa are members of APRASSA.

Cosmetic surgery is non-emergency (elective) surgery done to enhance appearance and it includes face, breast and body procedures and the like.

Non-specialist general practitioners may market themselves as cosmetic surgeons or something similar and give themselves bogus qualifications in the hope of duping the public into believing that they are qualified to perform these procedures. We see this and we are working with the Health Professions Council of South Africa to confine these GPs to their appropriate scope of practice. They are neither qualified nor allowed to do these procedures.

APRASSA’s policy statement on who may perform cosmetic surgery is below.

WHEN YOU CHOOSE A DOCTOR WHO IS A MEMBER OF APRASSA, YOU CAN BE ASSURED THAT YOUR SURGEON IS QUALIFIED IN ALL ASPECTS OF COSMETIC AND RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGERY.
