CALF IMPLANTS
Calf implants enhance the appearance of the calves (rear of lower legs). Calf implants augment or increase the size of the calves to improve the appearance of the lower leg in proportion with the upper leg (thigh) and rest of the body.
Procedure
Calf augmentation with implants improves the size and appearance of the calf area of the lower leg by inserting a silicone implant producing a cosmetic enhancement. The surgeon makes incisions into the patient's calves and inserts silicone calf implants. After the implants are inserted, the surgeon uses stitches to close the cuts. Calf augmentation focuses on the lower region of the patient's legs.
The insertion of calf implants takes one and a half hours.
General anaesthesia, epidural blockage, or intravenous sedation and local anaesthesia are used.
This is an outpatient procedure.
Mild to moderate temporary discomfort and swelling, mild bruising.
The implant may need to be removed and/or replaced to treat problems that include: implant rupture, the formation of scar tissue around the implant (capsular contraction), which may cause the calf to feel tight or hard, bleeding, infection and implant misplacement.
The patient must wear a compression bandage for two weeks after the surgery and avoid exercise for several weeks. The patient should not consume alcohol after surgery. Alcohol consumption may be resumed after three weeks. Bruising and swelling should be gone after several weeks.
The outcomes vary from patient to patient; however, the overall effect is the enhancement of the calf size for an improved appearance.
