FACIAL IMPLANTS

FACIAL IMPLANTS

Facial implants are solid, pre-shaped, three-dimensional objects used to improve the size and appearance of different areas, including the chin, jaw, nose, cheeks, and beside the nose (paranasal). Facial implants are specially designed, durable materials that enhance one's facial appearance. The type, shape and size of facial implants depend on the patient’s desires and reconstructive goals.

Some of the different types of facial implants include:

  • Chin implants:
The chin is a typical region for an implant. Chin implants enhance the projection, shape and size of the patient’s chin.
  • Cheek implants:
Cheek implants enhance the volume of the patient’s cheeks. These implants add volume to flat cheeks.
  • Jaw implants:
Jaw implants enhance one-third of the patient's face. A Jaw implant corrects a weak jaw and restores facial balance.

Procedure

Facial implant surgery provides a more harmonious appearance to the face. There are different types of implant material used to achieve these contour changes. There are also different shapes of facial implants according to the area to be enhanced.

The insertion of facial implants takes approximately one and a half hours.

General anaesthesia or intravenous sedation and local anaesthesia are commonly used.

This is an outpatient procedure.

Temporary discomfort and swelling, mild bruising.

The facial implant may need to be removed and/or replaced to treat problems that include: infection, implant displacement, or implant malposition. Implant rejection is a risk but is extremely rare.

The patient can return to work and normal activities within in few days. The patient should not consume alcohol after surgery. Bruising and swelling should have disappeared after several weeks.

The outcome varies from patient to patient, but results are essentially permanent. The overall effect is an enhancement of the deficient contours of the face to improve the facial proportions and overall balance of the facial appearance.
